For many industrial operators, environmental management systems have traditionally been viewed as compliance tools: essential for maintaining permits, satisfying regulators, and retaining certification. That assumption is now being challenged by the combined impact of two major developments: the publication of ISO 14001:2026 and the implementation of the revised EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED 2.0).

EPA recently awarded the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and SLR a 2020 New England Environmental Merit Award. MassDOT and SLR were commended for their exemplary work developing the Rivers & Roads Training program that focuses on providing a more resilient transportation system while protecting rivers and the environment. Training participants learn how to prevent future damages through innovative design practices around rivers and roads. Classroom and field trainings, which have been attended by over 300 participants, have been provided across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
